Lasse Hallström has had a long and storied career as a director, putting together films as well thought-of critically as What’s Eating Gilbert Grape and The Cider House Rules. In recent years, he’s directed titles like Salmon Fishing in the Yemen and this year’s Safe Haven. It is the latter movie the exclusive Blu-ray bonus clip above discusses, with actors Julianne Hough and Josh Duhamel talking about working with Hallström and the improvisational processes the director prefers to use in order to keep things real.

Safe Haven is based on a Nicholas Sparks novel and follows a young romance under unusual circumstances. After Katie (Hough) shows up in a brand new town, she finds solace in a new community and a young dad named Alex (Duhamel), but she’s certainly hiding something. The film wasn’t released worldwide, but still managed to make a fair amount of money for a Valentine’s Day release, pulling in over $71 million domestically. If you already are down with the film or just want to give it a shot, the Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment release will be hitting Blu-ray and DVD on Tuesday, May 7.

Unlike other films based on Sparks’ popular fiction, the Safe Haven Blu-ray release won’t come jam-packed with a ton of extras, although there are some nice bonus features, including deleted scenes and an alternate ending for fans. You can pre-order tomorrow’s release over at Amazon or check out the full list of bonus features.

Today, you can hear the smooth, silky voice of Josh Duhamel narrating the underwater documentary Planet Ocean, or you can just hang out for a few weeks while Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment puts together the Blu-ray, DVD, and digital download release of Safe Haven, a romance film based on a novel by—you guessed it—Nicholas Sparks. Safe Haven will hit the aforementioned mediums on May 7.

The nicely paced book by Sparks is a little more hurried when played out onscreen in Lasse Hallström’s film by Duhamel and actress Julianne Hough. The film follows a newcomer (Hough) to a small town who attracts the interest of a widower, Alex (Duhamel). The two begin to spend time together until a dark secret threatens to come between them.

If you’ve caught the flick, you’ll know the secret’s not much of a secret, although the film does offer an oddball plot twist. Overall, however, there’s no denying the chemistry Duhamel and Hough are able to achieve onscreen. For a popcorn of a flick, the film offers enough reasons for romance lovers, at least, to watch. Plus, if you are already know you liked the movie and are planning to buy Safe Haven, the Blu-ray bonus features, especially, are worthy of a perusal. You can check out the full list of extras, below.

Julianne Hough is in good company, she follows Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling as she stars in the latest of Nicholas Sparks’ film adaptations – the man who brought us The Notebook and with it introduced us to Ryan.

Yep, we have a lot to thank him for! The latest of the author’s books to hit the big screen is Safe Haven with Julianne Hough and Josh Duhamel taking on the romantic leads.

In honour of the latest love story that’s set to melt our hearts, we caught up with Julianne to discuss what we can expect from the new film.

Julianne said: ‘Audiences will get the same elements they get from The Notebook – that love, that romance but now there’s a suspense and thriller aspect.

‘Safe Haven is all about second chances and finding a place where you can be yourself and be happy.’

While The Notebook may be most people’s favourite romantic film – predominantly because of Ryan Gosling, Julianne lists a different read.

She added: ‘I was always a huge fan of Nicholas Sparks growing up, A Walk To Remember was the first book I read as a teenager I loved the movie so much.’

Looks like Josh Duhamel and Julianne Hough love the Harlem Shake!

The Safe Haven costars jumped on the viral video train at the premiere for their romantic flick in Berlin and no surprise, the Dancing with the Stars diva knows how to break it down.

Sky-high Brian Atwood heels and a pretty pink Zuhair Murad dress certainly didn’t stop the dancing queen from getting her Harlem shake on. And Julianne is all smiles as she whips her blond hair, waves her arms in the air and kicks up her tulle skirt like a pro.

Daddy-to-be Duhamel also took part in the premiere fun, breaking it down in his Boss suit and showing off his shaking swag. Fergie’s other half kicked off the viral dance—German flag in hand—before Julianne and the crowd joined in.

This isn’t Josh and Julianne’s first rodeo with the Baauer-inspired crazy dance—the costars also participated in a Harlem Shake tutorial (no, really) at the U.K. screening for the flick.

Regardless, we’re seriously impressed by the sheer volume of people the twosome rallied to participate in the Safe Haven premiere shake.

But really, we’re mostly jealous we missed out on all the fun!

How was it for you working opposite Julianne Hough in the role of Katie, seeing her embody that character?

Josh Duhamel: Julianne Hough is perfect for the part of Katie. She really is. She’s someone who has his incredible accessibility, she’s a very open person and she’s very likable. But she also has the ability to put up that wall when she needs to, not so much her as a person, but I can tell that when she came to audition for the part that she dealt with some things in the past that she had to overcome – which most of us have. Julianne is a fighter, and so is Katie. Behind that sparkly, beautiful facade there’s a girl who is fearless and that’s what this character needed to be. She’s great.
