PARADE.CONDENAST.COM – In his new book, Taking the Lead: Lessons From a Life in Motion, five-time Dancing With the Stars champion Derek Hough writes about his life–including how he got his start on DWTS. The memoir, in stores now, dives into his childhood as a competitive ballroom dancer, training with fellow DWTS pro Mark Ballas, and his record five wins on the hit ABC show.
In this excerpt, Hough talks about how he was picked by producers to join the cast of the show that made him a household name. Prior to signing on to season four, his younger sister, former DWTS pro dancer Julianne Hough convinced him to join the season three tour where they danced onstage alongside Cheryl Burke, Drew Lachey, and other stars from the show.
It was a blast—especially being with Julianne again—and when we wrapped, I headed back toEngland. Julianne was offered a spot as one of the pros on Dancing With the Stars Season 4. I wound up going to L.A. to do a guest spot with her: we did a groovy little number in week 6 to Joss Stone singing “Super Duper Love.” We choreographed it in a few hours and it was the first time we really danced together.
After the show, one of the producers, Rob Wade, came up to me backstage. “Hey, Derek. Great job. You have any interest in joining us next season?”
I didn’t even need a minute to think it over. “Nope,” I replied. “Thanks, but it’s not really what I want to do.”
Back I went to England. Mark and I were traveling around with our band, Almost Amy, doing the grind. We were focused on the music, and we were very much a team. I didn’t want to just go off to America without him. A few months passed and my phone rang again. We were still living with the Ballases, but in a new house. Corky and Shirley eventually divorced, and now we were living with just Shirley. The producers were still interested in me. Like Julianne, they seemed to have a hard time taking no for an answer.
I talked to Mark about it. I knew it would be a big transition—relocating my life from London to America. While I was mulling it over, Mark got a call, too. He had sent in an audition tape and they were interested in him as well.
“Dude, if we’re going to do this, then let’s do it together,” I told him. So that was it. We literally just packed our guitars and one suitcase apiece, and boarded a plane. I was aware that being on a live TV show in front of millions of people every week would likely change my life forever. I went into it very excited but also nervous. I knew a lot of the pros already through the ballroom circles, and I knew how good they were. I was coming in as a world youth champion—which is a big step below being a champion in the amateur or professional divisions. But on DWTS, the playing field was leveled. We were all starting from scratch, not knowing how good—or bad—our partners would be on that first day, and how much work we would need to do to shape them up. No matter how good we were, our partners were half of the equation.

EONLINE.COM – Julianne Hough is looking and feeling great these days.
After a little less than a year off from the dating scene, the actress is back in action with a new man and a new movie, a charitable project she’s super-psyched about and—let’s not overlook the obvious—an adorable pixie cut.
“I’ve had short hair before, I’ve had this for a while,” Hough, patting her short blond hair, told E! News‘ Giuliana Rancic and Terrence Jenkins during a visit to our studio Thursday. “I got extensions for a little project I was doing and I was just ready to take ‘em out. I decided that day. I was like, you know, just cut it off.”
She wore extensions for her recent cover spread in the March issue of Self, but the singing-dancing-and-acting triple threat revealed that she has a project coming up this summer that her pixie “will be perfect for.”
But while she wouldn’t go into details about that, Hough did get serious when Giuliana and Terrence asked her how she keeps her body looking so darn good, as evidenced on that Self cover.
“It’s been a challenge and I’m not going to lie. I went through through ups and downs and fluctuating,” the former Dancing With the Stars pro admitted. “This last year has been about moderation and not killing my body and sleeping. Honestly, doing workouts throughout the day. I’ll just be sitting there [on the set]…doing my tricep dips or something. Just anywhere.”

MSN.COM – Julianne Hough wants to go camping for her birthday next month.
The ‘Safe Haven’ star loves glitzy parties but wants to celebrate her 25th birthday on July 20 under the stars with some of her friends.
The blonde beauty said: ”It’s my birthday next month and I’m wanting to do a lake birthday because that’s kind of how I grew up, camping, boating and wakeboarding, stuff like that.”
The actress has embraced the Hollywood party scene since breaking up with her boyfriend Ryan Seacrest after three years of dating in April and enjoyed a night out with her older brother, Derek, 28, at the Svedka Splash of Summer party in Los Angeles on Tuesday (25.06.13).
The siblings recently returned from Mexico and Derek also told ‘Extra’ that it has inspired him to take more exotic trips.
He said: ”I just went on an amazing vacation, it was incredible and it’s inspired me to plan another one for sure. I said, ‘Julianne, why don’t you come with me’, and she invited a bunch of people and we had a really great time. We’re like great friends, it’s not even like a brother sister situation. We’re just really good friends and we have a great time.”
Julianne also added: ”Derek is my best friend. Going out on vacation with him is so much fun because we’re the same person. We went ATV-ing and horseback riding. We had a lot of fun.”
Other stars at the open air bash in Beverly Hills to celebrate the vodka brand’s new flavours Orange Cream Pop and Strawberry Colada included ‘Vampire Diaries’ actor Steven R. McQueen and Rob Kardashian’s ex-girlfriend Adrienne Bailon.

DOGTIPPER.COM – Instead of working like a dog, on June 21st pet parents can work alongside their dog as companies across the country invite their associates to spend their nine-to-five with a four-legged friend in celebration of National Bring Your Pet To Work Day.
Promoting Purina’s PETS AT WORK initiative is actress, singer and two-time Dancing with the Stars champion Julianne Hough, who said:
“I’m really excited to be working with Purina as part of the Pets At Work movement,” says Hough. “My dogs are my family and are with me all the time, even when I’m working. I encourage everyone to join me and bring their pets to work on June 21!”
“We’re proud to have Julianne Hough join our ‘Pets At Work’ movement as she clearly believes in the benefits of taking Lexi and Harley to work with her,” said Gordon Wade, director of marketing, Purina brand. “As pet lovers and owners, Purina associates enjoy the positive experience of bringing pets to work. Having pets walking through our offices every day makes for a warmer, friendlier environment at Purina, and we believe it helps with our productivity.
“We realize it won’t work for every company and every pet owner, but we encourage other companies to try it on ‘National Bring Your Pet To Work Day’ and see for themselves how bringing pets to work can be a real benefit – for pets and their owners.”
Along with daily health benefits, which include reduced blood pressure, decreased loneliness, help to lower cholesterol levels and increased physical activity, having a four-pawed pal in the work place also:
- Increases productivity and provides inspiration: Having Rover at the ready can help keep an employee relaxed and happy, thereby making work more enjoyable.
- Improves job satisfaction: At Purina, employee surveys show Pets At Work is a big benefit, and the company also believes it helps with employee retention.
- Encourages co-worker interaction: Pets add another layer of interaction between co-workers, and otherwise quiet employees can become more engaged when talking to a co-worker about their pets.
- Promotes healthy break time: Dog devotees tend to spend their breaks walking and caring for their four-legged friends. Even just taking a few minutes to play with a pet can help provide a mental break and lower stress.
- Projects a healthy work/life balance: For many people, pets play a significant role in their lives. Companies that encourage pets in the workplace show that they care about their employees and the balance between work and home.

ACCESSHOLLYWOOD.COM – Julianne Hough was on hand to watch “The Voice’s” Final 3 fight for the crown in Los Angeles on Monday – thanks to a little help from her pal, Blake Shelton.
“I’ve got two of my nieces in town and I’m friends with Blake, so he got us tickets,” Julianne told Billy Bush and Kit Hoover on Wednesday’s Access Hollywood Live.
Julianne and Blake became pals (and apparently, drinking buddies) when they simultaneously toured with fellow country singer George Strait.
“We both opened up for George a couple of years ago,” she said, adding, “We may or may not have done tequila shots on George Strait’s bus at one point.
“[That was] the greatest moment of my life possibly!” she added, laughing.
When Billy – who readily and frequently admits he harbors his own man crush on the “Boys Round Here” singer – professed his admiration for Blake, Julianne said Billy is not alone when it comes to loving the easygoing “Voice” coach.
“You and every other man out there!” she said. “I think more men have a crush on him [than women] actually!”
